Chapter Six

Cor was my man as it turned out--every bit as much in command of information regarding my quarry as he had been of other, less verbal, accomplishments last night. He not only knew about De Groot's club, he knew quite a bit about the man himself, the details of which he shared with me while he walked me back to my hotel.

"You're sure you're not cold?" I asked. I had managed to permanently misplace my shirt and Cor had insisted that I wear his leather jacket, claiming that he didn't mind the morning chill.

"No, really. It is very, how do you say it, invigorating?"

Judging from the way his nipples poked out into thick, hard points, I figured he wasn't telling the whole truth, but I appreciated his generosity nonetheless.

"Besides, just walking along with you makes me feel perfectly warm." He chuckled as he threw a heavy arm across my shoulders, pulling me close.

I felt a bit self-conscious at first, but the good people of Amsterdam, already up and going about their daily lives, didn't give us so much as a curious glance. I slipped my arm around his waist and hooked a thumb into the waistband of his leather pants.

"So, aside from being in the business of providing call boys for the tourists, what else is De Groot involved in?" I asked, continuing our discussion.

"I know for a fact that he sells drugs on rather a large scale. I also know that some of his more talented boys are made available to private connoisseurs--for a handsome price."

"He actually sells people to the highest bidder?" I had been skeptical when Ralph Wong told me a similar story about Nelson Chin, but my faith in human nature received a severe beating at that meeting. Now, I was ready to believe almost anything.

"Oh yes, my friend, it is a very lucrative business. I have heard rumors that he has received as much as two million euros for particularly prime specimens."

"Where does he get these people?"

"The world is full of people that no one wishes to look for. That applies especially to most of the young men who fall into De Groot's clutches. They usually work as bar prostitutes, and the smarter, handsomer ones double as escorts for businessmen and travelers who don't want to stay in the city alone. When a really extraordinary boy falls into his clutches, he has a list of clients who are willing to pay almost any price to get what they want."

"How do you know so much about all this?" I studied his handsome profile as we walked along the narrow streets, dodging cars, bicycles and the ubiquitous piles of dog droppings.

"I spent two years working for him when I was much younger," Cor said, his smile fading.

I tightened my grip on his waist and we walked the rest of the way to the hotel in silence.

"Thanks." I slipped out of his jacket and handed it back to him. "For everything."

"Good luck, Miles. Be careful of De Groot.
